The Day Before The Storm

Oh boy, there is a STORM A COMING! It's all the talk on the news, in the office, in the stores ... everywhere you go.  There are two storms headed our way and if they collide as expected we are looking at 15"-30" of snow (depending on where you are in the state - we are at about 24" in Hebron), thunder, wind ... and you know what that means. That's right. Trees down and power out. 

 

It has taken me several of these storms to get it down, but I think I've finally figured it out.  PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE! The day before the storm is a work day. Here's  what I am planning to get done today:

• Fill the car with gas.
• Wal-mart shopping run (I'll spare you the list).
• Grocery shopping run (I'll spare you the list).
• Turn off the water in the basement before bed in case the power goes out in the middle of the night. (Nothing like getting up half-asleep and trying to make your way down two sets of stairs in complete darkness to find the knobs in the basement.)
• Clean out the fridge and run the dishwasher tonight and make sure everything is clean and put away.
• Do all laundry and make sure everything is clean and dry and put away.
• Wash my hair Thursday night and curl it in case the power goes out early Friday morning. If we still have power Friday morning when I get up, wash it again and curl it. Just in case. Enjoy that hot shower! It's the thing I miss the most when the power goes out.
• Charge all electronics. Load iphone with podcasts and games and anything else that can entertain me in case we don't have power all weekend.
• Find the flashlights, batteries, matches, cards, games, etc. Know where they are in case we need them.  Put flashlights by the bed.
• Pull out a few books/magazines for reading in quiet afternoon hours.

You'll know if we have power because I will blog photos of the snow! I am  hoping to get some good ones. If you don't see any blogs this weekend, you can assume we are hanging out without power. 

 

David does have a small generator so we will be able to charge a few things, keep the heat and the fridge running. It won't be as bad as the first time the power went out. Our water company bought a generator also so we will have running water. (Just no running water in my bathroom.) It's not the end of the world. We'll survive. But it's certainly not ideal. Just wish I was in Texas this weekend! I'd rather have rainy and warm. Rainy and freezing is NO FUN!
