Bar Americain Part I

Wednesday afternoon I got an email from David. "I have an idea/plan.  And I'm not going to tell you what it is. Are you up for it?"  Normally, this is where I say.....tell me....tell me...I hate surprises, etc.  But for some reason, I just said "Sure."  I got home and called David.  "Can you be ready in 15 minutes?" he said. "Sure," I said again, surprising myself with the answer.  15 minutes?  I ran around and brushed my teeth, stuck a few rollers in my ponytail and he was there to pick me up.  I thought we were going to have Chinese food in Colchester. I knew he had a coupon and I knew they had music one night we were there and we just missed it, so I figured we were going to eat and hear the music. We pulled out and headed toward Colchester....yep....I'm a smart one! I was right.  We chatted and made small talk - no word on where we were going. I didn't really ask since I had it all figured out.  But we kept driving....and driving..and driving. It's dark and I'm not all that familiar with the area anyway really - it's all tree-lined highway to me.  But when I saw Uncasville I realized we were going to the casino!  FUN!  I have one more burger on my list to try....what a fun idea.  "You're the best, David!"

We parked and started across the parking lot.  David said "There's more. Want me to tell you?"  YES!! OF COURSE!! "We're going to the Bar Amercain opening."   WHAT??  We have been waiting and waiting for it to open.  We almost went to the one in New York for my birthday, but decided to go for the Broadway show instead. (Which I have to admit was the better choice.) But every time we go for hamburgers, we stop by and see if there's any word on a date.  David thought he heard one time it was opening before Thanksgiving. I'd never seen anything but "Coming in the Fall".  So, David called the Bar Americain number. No answer.  He called Mohegan Sun and a lady told him that Wednesday and Thursday was the soft opening and there were no reservations, just show up.  He wasn't telling anyone just the people who "walk by" in the casino had a chance to eat there.

We practically ran through the casino!  So exciting! I couldn't wait.  (I can't believe I didn't trip the way we were On the way I stopped and took a photo of the outside. It didn't come out very good with the different lighting in the casino, but you get the idea. It's all lit up really bright yellow (despite the bad photography on my part).

Here's a better photo I found on-line:

We walked in.  The restaurant wasn't very crowded.  SCORE!  The restaurant is gorgeous! If you want to see photos of the inside you can see them here:  http://www.baramericain.com/mohegansun/index.php.  We walked up and David starting talking to the hostess.  I was looking around in the back/kitchen area.  There was BOBBY!!  I squeezed David's arm. He's still talking. I'm not listening.  YEAH...so fun!  I can't wait to be seated. I hope it's where we can see the kitchen!  I look over and David's not smiling. I start listening.  Apparently they are "closed" for the night.  I thought there weren't any reservations??!  The kitchen can only handle so many people and we can't get in.  The reservations are already booked up. "Can we get in tomorrow?" I asked.  "Yes" the hostess said cherrily.  No reservations, huh?  We decided you probably couldn't call for them, but if you walked in, you could get them.  So, tomorrow at 7:00pm we are going to get to eat at Bobby's new restaurant!  David asked if we could sit near the raw bar (by the kitchen where the action is).

We watched Bobby for a little bit.  He was very calm.  Surprisingly so. I guess it's not his first restaurant opening! ;)  He would go in and out of the kitchen. He was watching the food and putting finishing touches on things.  I took a picture from the other side of the wall while he was talking to who we assumed was the restaurant manager.

We stopped for a piece of Godiva and had leftovers for dinner.  But tonight, we'll eat like kings! ;) Can't wait!!

I'm so envious! I love Bobby!!! I don't know how you could have kept from trying to meet him. Or better yet get a picture of him and you. I'm dying to read your report of your next visit there. I think David is really nice to have done this. He knows how happy that trip would make you.
